The Chairman, Odi-Olowo/ Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area, Hon. Rasaq Olusola Ajala, has urged the youths in his council area to take advantage of the grassroot sports’ developmentĀ in his doman, saying that they have a lot to gain by participating in the programme.
He said through this initiative, anti-social behaviours, like drug trafficking, smoking, teenage pregnancy and armed robbery, would be drastically addressed in the council.
Ajala, at a press conference he addressed in his Ilupeju, Lagos office, recently said the programme, tagged: “Odi-Olowo Sports Fiesta,” was coming on the heels of the ‘Talent Hunt’ he organised last year.
He said some of the sporiting activities he had lined up included, street soccer, basketball, boxing, table tennis, draught and cards competition; and urged parents to encourage their children and wards to participate actively in the programme.
The council boss, who came in company with his officials, including the Vice Chairman, Hon Seyi Jakande, said his council had record of excellence in sports, having won laurels for his council and Lagos State in general in the recent past.
He added that sports has multifaceted advantages for mankind, saying, “while sports is about competition, it also has power to transform lives, unite people and provide jobs and other pathways to success.”
He said his administration was gender-sensitive; and would carry all sexes, Community Development Associations, among others, along in the course of the programme to enhance its success.
According to him, his govenment has, over the years, been aggressive in developing infrastructure like roads, health, especially for infant and maternal care and education.
He poited out that thousands of students have continued to benefit from free educational materials like text/ exercise books, free holiday coaching just as deserving students/ pupils were given cash and other rewards to encourage them.
