June 12: Protesters converge on Lagos, Oyo, others**demand better Nigeria**Protesters allegedly arrested in Ojota**Tear gas in Abuja

Bj Bobby and Pam Jenny/

It is no longer news that June 12 is the new Democracy Day in Nigeria to mark 22 years of uninterrupted years of return to Democratic rule since 1999. Although it has been a mixed grill since then, Nigerians have continued to register their grievances on the state of governance. According to findings by our correspondents, protesters have started converging at the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Lagos, also, others have also gathered in locations in Akure, Osogbo and Oyo among others, holding placards demanding for better governance in Nigeria, equity, fairness and provision of basic amenities as well as an end to insecurity which has claimed many lives.   Some protesters have allegedly been arrested by the Police in Ojota, Lagos.
In a related development, Men of the Nigeria Police Force on Saturday morning thwarted a June 12 protest in the Gudu area of the Federal Capital Territory when they stormed the area and started firing teargas canisters, according to reports by Punch Newspaper.
The protest began around 08:30 am and was going on smoothly with the protesters, mostly youths, expressing their dissatisfaction with the state of the nation.
The protesters, who chanted “Buhari must go”, “Say no to injustice”, amongst other solidarity phrases, took to their heels and scampered for safety when the security operatives started shooting.    It will be recalled that Democracy Day was marked on May 29 yearly since the return to Civillian Rule but was changed to June 12 in 2018 as a mark of honour to recognise the self-acclaimed winner of the 1993 Presidential Elections, Late MKO Abiola and other key participants in the struggle, including the late Legal Luminary, Gani Fawehinmi, SAN.  This is just as foreign missions such as the United States and the United Kingdom had issues alerts to their citizens in the country to avoid gatherings and protests today.
